Plot summary
The Environmental Protection Agency sends Dr. Robert Verne to Maine to report on a dispute between a logging operation and the Opie tribe. His wife Maggie comes with him. She is pregnant and has not told him, since he does not want children. In town, the paper mill director Bethel Isely blames the Opies for lumberjacks and a rescue team who have gone missing, while the Opies say Katahdin, a forest spirit, has been awakened by the logging and their people are falling ill. Verne finds the woods full of damage: a salmon large enough to swallow a duck, a vicious raccoon, roots growing on the surface, a tadpole the size of a bullfrog. John Hawks and Ramona Hawks ask him to include the Opie side in what he writes.

- The original concept for Katahdin was considerably more terrifying than what would eventually appear in the film and was actually quite similar to the poster art, but when Frankenheimer saw the concept he suggested it should be altered to look more 'bear-like'. He considered Prophecy a film with far more potential than what he eventually delivered.
- Frankenheimer later said he wanted to make an 'R' rated version of the film, but Eisner insisted on a 'PG' rated one. 'It didn't work as a PG,' argued Frankenheimer. 'It wasn't scary.'

Some scenes containing violence and gore were cut because director John Frankenheimer deemed them 'gratuitous'. The deleted material included a longer close-up of Huntoon's headless corpse and a shot of Katahdin graphically disembowelling Bethel Isely, played by Richard Dysart.- Filming in British Columbia in 1978 is credited with helping launch "Hollywood North," the start of a major film production industry in Vancouver and the surrounding province that has since hosted hundreds of American movie shoots.
