Plot summary
The case reaches Martin Beck, a police inspector in Stockholm: a famous industrialist has been killed at a restaurant in Malmö. The people who fall under suspicion lead Beck into illegal arms deals. The inquiry raises the question of whether the dead man was caught up in that trade himself, and which of the two, the murderer or the industrialist, was the bigger criminal.
