Plot summary
Sylvie Cooper is a troubled teenager at an expensive private school who frequently clashes with her father Darryl. She befriends a poor, street-smart girl she nicknames Ivy after seeing a stick-on tattoo on her thigh. Ivy quickly wins over Sylvie's chronically ill mother Georgie and her father, and she practically moves in with the family. The girls share clothes and a bed, and Georgie lends Ivy some of her outfits. Ivy begins flirting with Darryl and manipulates Sylvie into getting a permanent tattoo. As Ivy's influence over the household grows, Sylvie becomes irritated, but Ivy continues to ingratiate herself with the Cooper family.

According to director Katt Shea, Poison Ivy's original ending had Ivy getting away with her crimes and hitch-hiking along a road, but New Line insisted she be punished and made Shea shoot a new ending where Ivy dies. The studio then wanted Shea to revive the character for sequels, which she refused to do.- Poison Ivy developed greatly from New Line's original premise, going through three different drafts of the script and four different endings.
