Plot summary
Pinky Johnson has trained as a nurse in the North, where she let people take her for white. She returns to the Southern town where Dicey, the laundress who raised her and cannot read, lives. Pinky tells Dicey that she passed for white at nursing school. She has also fallen in love with Dr. Thomas Adams, a white doctor who does not know about her black heritage. When Pinky tries to collect money Dicey is owed, local law officers harass her, and two white men attempt to assault her. A black physician, Dr. Canady, asks her to train black nursing students, but Pinky intends to go back north. Dicey asks her to stay and nurse Miss Em, an ill elderly white neighbor Pinky dislikes. Pinky agrees after learning that Miss Em once cared for Dicey through pneumonia.
