Plot summary
A rare strain called Pineapple Express is what brings process server Dale Denton to his dealer Saul Silver's apartment. Dale's next delivery of court papers takes him to the home of drug lord Ted Jones, where he sees Jones and a corrupt police officer shoot a rival gangster. He flees, causing a commotion and dropping his roach of Pineapple Express. Jones recognizes the strain, and his men Budlofsky and Matheson pay a visit to Red, a dealer who supplies Saul. Back at Saul's apartment, Dale worries the roach can be traced, since only Red and Saul carry the strain, and the two decide they must leave the city.

- Seth Rogen was originally set to play the drug dealer Saul Silver in Pineapple Express, but producer Judd Apatow suggested James Franco for the part instead; after a table read Rogen agreed and took the role of process server Dale Denton.
- Seth Rogen said the ideal budget for Pineapple Express was $40 million, but Sony Pictures allotted $25 million instead, a cut the actor attributed to the subject matter, saying it was "because it's a weed movie".
- M.I.A.'s song "Paper Planes" was used in the trailer for Pineapple Express but is not in the film itself or on its soundtrack; after the trailer's release it gained massive airplay and reached the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.
- Producer and story co-writer Judd Apatow said the idea for Pineapple Express came from Brad Pitt's stoner character Floyd in the 1993 film True Romance.
