Plot summary
Libertad keeps her teenage son Mateo close: they share a mostly pink apartment, sleep in the same bed, and she answers questions put to him. After he tries to run off during her hospital examination, Libertad deliberately hurts his toenail while trimming it at home. When he attempts to leave at night, a severe headache brings him down in the street, and she brings him back. Doctors diagnose a malignant glioblastoma; surgery takes out the tumor, and a demanding course of treatment awaits. Libertad is offered help from a psychologist, Carolina López, who grows frustrated when Libertad replies to questions meant for Mateo. In private, Libertad says that Roberto, her former husband, walked out on her when Mateo was an infant. Carolina tells her she has to accept her son's wish for independence.
