Plot summary
Near Geneva, Switzerland, the first experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider fall to a large team of experimental physicists who must get the machine running. A promising initial test run is followed by a liquid helium leak that damages its electromagnets, and Fabiola Gianotti, Martin Aleksa and Monica Dunford weigh how to handle the response. Repairs follow, and the collider runs again at half power. A second thread follows competing theories of the universe. Nima Arkani-Hamed argues for the multiverse, predicting a Higgs boson mass near 140 giga-electronvolts, while his mentor Savas Dimopoulos favors the more established supersymmetry, at about 115.
