Plot summary
In 1969, a man who clashes with a rebel faction leader is sent to a labor reform camp in northwestern China. His wife ends their marriage and his daughter cuts ties with him. He learns the girl died at 14 in a school labor activity and that a newsreel recorded it. He escapes, hoping a rural screening will show him the reel. Meanwhile, Liu, an orphan, makes off with a reel of film to replace a lampshade, and the fugitive witnesses the theft.
