Plot summary
Frank Richards and Julie Cullen meet at work, and the friendship between the black man and the white divorcée grows into a romance. Julie has raised her daughter Ellen alone for four years, since her husband, Joe, abandoned them when Ellen was a year old. Frank's parents, William and Martha, are among those who object to the pairing, and racial prejudice strains the couple. Frank and Julie decide to stay together, and they marry, which brings Julie and Ellen into the Richards household. Ellen's arrival softens Martha's heart, while William stays cool toward her and holds the marriage to be a foolish endeavor.
