In Qing dynasty Beijing in 1900, Wong Fei Hung means to head back to his home in Foshan, taking with him Leung Foon and Clubfoot, his two apprentices, and his father Wong Kei-Ying. He also meets 14th Aunt, the sister of 13th Aunt, who has a crush on him. Before they can go, the Manchu general A'lan Chengdu brings word of a lion dance contest staged by the Eight-Nation Alliance, with dragon, centipede and eagle masks allowed alongside lions, and asks Wong, once champion of the national contest, to compete for China. Wong agrees, holding that China has to win. An all-female cult called the Red Lantern Sect, which kills foreigners and destroys what it deems alien to Chinese culture, attacks a German medical clinic, and Wong moves to stop the killing.
