Plot summary
A woman dies giving birth in the Widow Corney's orphanage, leaving her son a gold locket with a portrait inside. Corney keeps the locket, and her assistant, Mr. Bumble, picks the name Oliver Twist off a rotating alphabetical list. At twelve, after drawing the shortest straw at dinner, the boy asks for more food and is thrown out without it. He comes back at night for the locket and leaves for London, hoping to learn who he is. There Jack Dawkins, the Artful Dodger, stops him from taking an apple, boasts of being a professional thief, and brings him in with the boys Fagin houses and trains to steal.
