Plot summary
Setsuko Kawashima works in a Tokyo office, keeps her distance from her co-workers, and her studio apartment is cluttered. Her niece Mika has enrolled in a year-long English course that she can no longer pay for, so she persuades Setsuko to take her place and attend a free first class. At the school, an American teacher named John hugs her, hands her a blonde wig, and calls her Lucy; a classmate, Takeshi Komori, goes by Tom. Setsuko is charmed and keeps coming to class. John then quits and flies home, and a postcard from Mika gives an address in Los Angeles. Setsuko decides to go after her, and her estranged sister Ayako, Mika's mother, insists on coming too.
