Nocturna (2007) on Netflix

Plot summary

In a dilapidated orphanage, the other children pick on Tim because he is afraid of the dark. Too frightened to fetch a ball from the basement, he has to find another way up to the roof after they remove the doorknob he needs. On the roof his favorite star disappears. Then the Cat Shepherd arrives, an ape-like figure who herds cats and makes children sleep peacefully. A cat named Tobermory, who has narcolepsy, becomes Tim's guardian. Tim persuades the Shepherd to help him work out why the stars keep vanishing. Moka, who guards the night, pays the boy's plea little attention, so Tim asks to be taken to the Lighthouse of the Stars. Their way runs through Nocturna, a world where creatures of all shapes and sizes create the night.
