Plot summary
Robert Schmadtke works for a Berlin street-cleaning firm that clears the sites of fatal accidents and other deadly incidents. The job lets him collect specimens from the dead, a habit his wife Betty shares. Their apartment is hung with pictures of famous killers and centerfolds, and jars of human parts sit preserved in formaldehyde. One day the agency is sent to a body recovered from a lake, and Robert is drawn to how far the man has rotted. He smuggles the corpse home without his co-workers noticing and gives it to Betty as a present. Betty is glad of the gift, and the dead man stays in the apartment with them.

- The creators of Nekromantik skipped West Germany's Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft review board and released the film only to adults, defying censorship standards under which 32 horror films had been banned, among them The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Evil Dead.
- For its gore the no-budget film used real animal intestines and the eyeballs of pigs, and its rabbit scene was documentary-style footage of a professional rabbit breeder at work.
- The scandal over the sequel Nekromantik 2 (1991) led German authorities to temporarily ban mail-order sales of the original Nekromantik, which until then had faced no significant reprisals.
- Nekromantik was Jörg Buttgereit's first feature-length film; before it he had made only featurettes in the Super 8 format.
