Plot summary

Conscripted into the Siamese-Vietnamese War, Mak leaves his pregnant teenage wife Nak behind in their village east of Bangkok. He is wounded in the fighting and barely survives, and after a long absence he comes home to Nak and their son. A friend who visits sees Mak settled with his family. The villagers, though, believe something quite different about Nak, and their talk reaches Mak. When he asks her about it, Nak says the village turned against her after he left and that their stories about the son are lies as well. Mak believes her and will not listen to anyone who repeats the claims.
