Plot summary
Mak is drafted to fight in a war and leaves his pregnant wife, Nak, behind in Phra Khanong. Wounded in battle, he recovers in a medical camp with fellow soldiers Ter, Puak, Shin, and Aey, who become his friends. Nak goes through a difficult labor by herself, and her calls for help go unheard. Villagers begin to say that she died and that her ghost haunts the house, and some claim her lullabies drift to them after dark. Mak and his four friends come back to a town gone silent, reach the house at night, and meet Nak and the couple's baby, Dang. Night falls before they can travel on, so the friends stay. Market day brings shunning from frightened villagers, and a drunk woman who tries to warn Mak is hushed by her son.
