Plot summary
Carla Harris and her husband Mark are driving home from a restaurant when they see a man attacking a woman. Mark goes to help and is killed, and the attacker gets away when the police arrive. Officer Russo tells Carla that nobody saw anything and that he will call her if anything turns up. Carla leaves for her parents' house, where she means to start over. At a gas station she runs into Burke, an old boyfriend, and his friend Sparky. The sheriff pays no attention when she asks for help with the local men who bother her.
