Plot summary
In 1948, Coweta County, Georgia, has no unsolved felonies on Sheriff Lamar Potts's record. In neighboring Meriwether County, John Wallace rules a vast estate called the Kingdom, where his power is absolute and the sheriff answers to him. Wilson Turner, a poor tenant sharecropper, is dismissed by Wallace after being allowed to make the liquor run; he and his wife and child are forced off their farm and his crops go unharvested. Turner steals one of Wallace's prized Guernsey cows. Caught in another county, he is brought back to Meriwether County and released from jail for lack of evidence. Wallace and three of his men wait outside, and Turner drives off with the gang in pursuit.
