Plot summary
Lawyer Nicholas Arden goes to court with two requests: that his first wife, Ellen Wagstaff Arden, be declared legally dead five years after the plane they were on crashed into the Pacific, and that he be allowed to marry Bianca Steele, a psychoanalyst. Judge Bryson rules in his favor on both counts, and the newlyweds leave at once for Monterey. On that same day a U.S. Navy submarine brings Ellen to shore; she has been rescued from the deserted island where she lived for those five years. Back at the Los Angeles house she meets her small daughters, who do not recognize her. Her mother-in-law, Grace Arden, reveals that Nicholas was married that morning and that he is honeymooning at the hotel where he and Ellen once stayed. Grace urges Ellen to fly there.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Marilyn Monroe was fired early in this film's original production cycle after repeated absences on filming days, having appeared in only about 30 minutes of usable film. Lee Remick was announced as her replacement and shot some scenes, but Dean Martin balked at working with anyone but Monroe. Monroe was rehired but died before she could resume filming.
- James Garner accidentally broke Doris Day's rib during the massage scene in which he pulls Day off Polly Bergen. He was not aware of what had happened until the next day, when he felt the bandage while putting his arms around Day.
- The producers scheduled the scene with Doris Day riding through a car wash for the last day of shooting because they feared that the chemicals in the detergents might affect her complexion. When it went off without a hitch they admitted their ploy to Day, then used the story in promotional materials for the film.
- Dean Martin was cast as Nick Arden in the original version only after the initial choice, James Garner, was committed to doing The Great Escape.
- Move Over, Darling grossed $12,705,882 in the United States, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1963 and helping keep 20th Century Fox afloat after the losses the studio had incurred in the making of Cleopatra.
