Plot summary
Nancy Johnson is a teenager in rural Pennsylvania whose stepfather Bert, a police officer, tries to rape her, and she leaves home. She hitchhikes toward her sister's home in San Francisco. Hank and Tom, two young men, give her a ride. At a bar, the staff refuse to serve them because Hank is Black. With little money, they take groceries from a small market and two local officers chase them. A dirt road into the woods gets them out of sight, and there they see a man carrying something covered by a sheet. Rather than be caught, they camp for the night. The backwoods around them are home to a cult that sacrifices young women in Satanic rites.

- Midnight was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty panic, though it was not prosecuted for obscenity.
- Tom Savini supplied special effects and props for the film, including a real skeleton and the black-faced makeup for the cult's dead mother; when he left to work on Knightriders (1981), director John Russo finished the remaining effects shots.
