Plot summary
The SS Martha is the oldest freighter in the shipping line's fleet, a rusty tramp steamer plying the Mediterranean that the company has more or less forgotten. Her crew, among them Kaptajn Peter Nielsen and Hovmester Watson, takes advantage of the neglect and lives comfortably aboard a ship that is falling apart around them, though money is always short. Then the line's owner, Skibsreder O.P. Andersen, a strict man of the old school, suddenly needs to sail on Martha. He is not pleased with what he finds, either the ship or the men who sail her. For the crew, the old steamer's place in the fleet now hangs on a race: Martha must beat the Harald, or the scrapyard is next.
