Plot summary
Maria Marten, a village maiden, lives in rural England in the 1820s. William Corder is the squire of the village, and he gets her into trouble. Maria's father, Farmer Thomas Marten, believes her seducer is her admirer Carlos, a gypsy, and he throws his daughter out of the house. Maria turns to Corder, who has spoken of marriage to her, and she is carrying his child. The tale comes from the true case of the Red Barn Murder.
