Plot summary
CIA analysts and operatives who spent more than a decade trying to understand and track Osama bin Laden describe that work. The agency opens the Bin Laden Issue Station, code-named Alec Station, in 1995, and a group of female analysts known as the Band of Sisters handles the early intelligence about the jihad movement. One of the analysts writes the agency's first warning to the President about bin Laden. A journalist who has reported from Afghanistan for decades recalls how little bin Laden seemed to matter in the mid-1980s. After bin Laden declares war on the United States, the CIA pays attention to his attack warnings but cannot pin down the dates and timing of planned attacks, which the analysts call difficult because al-Qaeda is a clandestine organization.
