Plot summary
In Savannah, Georgia, Julia Sullivan works as a schoolteacher for deaf children, and her childhood was scarred by Mary, her sadistic twin sister. Their uncle, Father James, a local Catholic priest, presses Julia to visit Mary, who suffers from a severe skin disease and is kept in a mental institution. The visit goes badly, and Mary tells Julia that she will suffer as Mary has. As the sisters' birthday nears, news reaches Julia that Mary has left the institution, and she grows uneasy that someone may be hiding inside her large house. Her psychologist boyfriend, Sam Edwards, is about to leave for a business trip to San Francisco.
