Plot summary
Wayne Dobie has never drawn his gun in years of photographing crime scenes for the Chicago police, and colleagues joke that he is Mad Dog. During a holdup at a convenience store he saves Frank Milo, a mob boss, and Milo invites him to a party at his comedy club to show his appreciation. There Glory, a bartender, spills hot coffee on Wayne's hand. Milo's thank-you is Glory's personal services for one week. Glory is trying to pay off a personal debt to Milo, and once the debt is cleared she wants nothing to do with him, though Milo seems to hold power over her.

Universal test-screened Mad Dog and Glory, then insisted on reshooting the final scene because audiences could not accept Robert De Niro, the Raging Bull of a decade earlier, losing a street fight to Bill Murray's Milo.- According to a profile of producer Steven A. Jones written by Luke Ford, the film was delayed by a year over changes the studio required, even though Jones and director John McNaughton were contractually barred from altering Richard Price's script.
