Plot summary
Liu Pingguo and An Kun came to Beijing from China's northeast for work. They live in a rundown apartment; she gives foot massages at the Golden Basin, a parlor owned by Lin Dong, a businessman from Guangdong, and An Kun washes windows. Lin Dong's wife Wang Mei practices Chinese medicine and cannot have children, which strains the marriage. One night, after Pingguo's friend Xiao Mei is dismissed for attacking a customer, the two women drink and Pingguo passes out in an empty office at the parlor. Lin Dong's advance becomes a rape. An Kun, washing the windows above, sees it, and begins demanding money from Lin Dong. An Kun also approaches Wang Mei. When Pingguo learns she is pregnant, Lin Dong proposes a bargain over the child.
