Plot summary
Speaking from a prison cell, Alan Musgrave looks back on the year he gave to Barbara Ann Greene's wishes. Barbara Ann is a high school senior, the daughter of Marie, a cocktail waitress who is unhappy about turning forty. She wants success in every form and wants everyone to love her. She and Alan seal a pact in wet cement. Soon she has the twelve cashmere sweaters that membership in an exclusive girls' club requires. She quits her classes for a post as secretary to the principal, and she takes part in church activities overseen by Bob Bernard, a strait-laced man.
