Plot summary

Mire Yoshizuki is a 27-year-old office worker in Tokyo who has returned from overseas and feels her managers do not respect her. Sora Nagase, 22, in her fourth year of college, is pushed by her parents toward teaching and worries about Yūji Makita, one of the pupils at the school where she interns, who has a learning disability. Reika Kawatani, 20, works part time at an okonomiyaki shop in Hiroshima, and her boyfriend Seiya Kubo keeps taking her savings for college. Hearing a rumor that a Western-style building in Kamakura was the model for the magic shop in Ojamajo Doremi, Sora visits it and meets Mire and Reika there. They explore the building and find they all watched the series as children and kept its magic bead toys.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Looking for Magical Doremi (2020)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Director Junichi Sato first planned the film around Doremi and her classmates as adults, with a miracle caused by a time paradox. Character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi argued this would alienate viewers who could not relate, and pushed for a story with wider age appeal instead.
  • The production staff chose actors who had grown up watching Ojamajo Doremi for the leads. Aoi Morikawa won the part of Sora after posting about the film online, and producer Hiromi Seki sent her a personal letter after seeing her in the live-action drama Kakafukaka.
  • SPOILERThe original six Ojamajo Doremi voice actresses came to the final day of recording to voice the film's final scene, after Aoi Morikawa, Rena Matsui and Kanako Momota had recorded theirs. Nami Miyahara also coached Rena Matsui on her English lines, since Mire came from overseas.
  • Scriptwriter Takashi Yamada said an earlier version followed a 20-year-old Doremi hunting for a time capsule she and her friends buried at their elementary school graduation, only to find it missing. He felt it would have pleased Ojamajo Doremi fans but not a general audience.
  • Producer Hiromi Seki surveyed about 100 women and men about the daily worries of women in their 20s, and the results were given to scriptwriter Takashi Yamada. The staff then created Sora, Mire and Reika at different ages to show their generational differences.
  • Shohei Miura, who plays Ryuichi Omiya, also watched Ojamajo Doremi as a child; after he mentioned the film on social media and his radio show, he learned he had been offered the part. His favourite character, like Omiya's, was Onpu, which Seki called coincidental.
  • Scriptwriter Takashi Yamada said Sora, Mire and Reika were not based on real people but each borrowed traits from Ojamajo Doremi characters: Sora got Hazuki's glasses and Doremi's teacher manner, Mire got Onpu's outspokenness and Reika got Aiko's responsible streak.
