Plot summary
Jack Burns is a ranch hand who roams New Mexico with his horse Whiskey, carrying no papers. Word reaches him that his friend Paul Bondi is serving two years for helping immigrants who entered the country illegally. Burns rides to Duke City to see Bondi's wife Jerry, who tells him the next visiting day is days away. To get inside the jail, he lands in a bar brawl after a one-armed man throws a bottle and a glass at him and calls him a coward; Burns finally slaps him. The police bring him in, but crowded cells send him back out, so he throws a punch at a policeman and earns a year. In the cell block he tells Bondi he means to break out; Bondi will not risk a longer sentence.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's working title was The Last Hero, but Kirk Douglas wanted to call it The Brave Cowboy, after the novel, and open it in art houses; Universal instead marketed it as a Western titled Lonely Are the Brave and distributed it with no particular support.
- Jerry Goldsmith was hired to score the film on a recommendation from composer Alfred Newman, who had been impressed by Goldsmith's music for the television show Thriller but had never met him.
