Plot summary
Clara Johnson, 26, is traveling in Italy for the summer with her mother, Meg. In Florence she meets Fabrizio Naccarelli, and the two fall in love. A pony's kick injured Clara in childhood and left her with a developmental disability. Fabrizio's grasp of English and Clara's of Italian are both slight, so he reads her simplicity as innocence. Meg tries to tell his father about her condition at a local holiday celebration, but a firearms accident among the performers interrupts the moment, and no later chance arises. The Naccarelli family is taken with Clara.

- Tomas Milian was originally cast as the Italian groom in Light in the Piazza, but George Hamilton lobbied hard for the part, persuading Ben Thau he was suitable, and won it over fellow contenders James Darren and Sal Mineo.
- Italian actress Rosella Spinelli reportedly turned down the female lead in the peplum film The Fury of Hercules to take the minor part of Giuseppina in Light in the Piazza, so she could work with director Guy Green.
