Plot summary

Chen Yunqiao's wife Chunqin is eating melons in her garden when a talking black cat appears and rewards her with a pot of coins. Kūkai is a Japanese monk and a Kentōshi in Chang'an. He is called to the imperial palace to exorcise Emperor Dezong, who dies as a cat wails. Court scribe Bai Letian is ordered to record the death as illness. As the two leave the palace, a wooden tablet rises on its own and threatens Li Song, the crown prince. Bai doubts a cat is involved, having never seen one in three years of palace service. He is composing his own poem about Emperor Xuanzong and Lady Yang.
