Plot summary
Poland is still under martial law in 1983, a measure the communist authorities brought in to suppress Solidarity. On May 12 a police patrol stops and beats Grzegorz Przemyk, a high school student and the son of Barbara Sadowska, an opposition poet. Two days later he is dead. Jurek Popiel, a friend who saw the assault, chooses to testify in court against the officers. The Ministry of the Interior first treats the case as minor. After twenty thousand people march behind Grzegorz's coffin through the streets of Warsaw, the state turns on Jurek and on Barbara, working to stop him from testifying.
