- Composer and sound artist Yair Elazar Glotman completed Last and First Men after director Jóhann Jóhannsson died in February 2018, making the film Jóhannsson's debut and final directorial work.
- Last and First Men is the only feature film directed by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who died of an overdose two years before its release.
- The film grew out of a 2017 multimedia performance at the Manchester International Festival, which combined a film narrated by actress Tilda Swinton with a score played by the BBC Philharmonic.
