Plot summary
Bambino, a young Italian boy, is out on the water at night with his father Papà and his grandfather Nonno, who have brought him along to their work for the first time. The three anchor far from land, off Genoa, Italy, and wait. Nonno gives the boy a cap like the ones he and Papà wear, and the two men immediately disagree about it: Papà pulls the cap low over Bambino's eyes, Nonno pushes it back up. The two men have their own opinions and their own long-standing traditions, and Bambino has to work out whose example to follow, Papà's or Nonno's.

- La Luna was director Enrico Casarosa's first film, and its story drew on his own childhood as well as tales by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Italo Calvino, specifically Calvino's "The Distance of the Moon."
- The look of La Luna was modeled on Hayao Miyazaki's anime and on La Linea, the work of Italian cartoonist Osvaldo Cavandoli.
