Plot summary
In June 1934, ten-year-old Kit Kittredge lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, and wants to write for a newspaper, composing articles on a typewriter in her attic bedroom. Her father's car dealership failed and the mortgage payments fell behind, and he is in Chicago looking for work. To bring in income, her mother takes in boarders: the magician Mr. Berk, the dance instructor Miss Dooley, and Miss Bond, who drives a mobile library. Muggings and robberies have been reported and blamed on hobos. Kit meets Will and Countee, two young people living in a camp near the Ohio River. She writes about the camp and offers the piece to Mr. Gibson, the editor of the Cincinnati newspaper, who shows no interest.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The costume department used vintage photographs by Dorothea Lange and old Sears-Roebuck catalogues for the cast's Depression-era clothing, then distressed the costumes with sandpaper and trisodium phosphate, fading the colors to give a more aged, worn out feel.
- Production took roughly four months because of limits on Abigail Breslin's availability before she started Nim's Island, so a multiple-camera setup was used to speed the process up, with the crew careful not to shoot anything that would be out of place in the 1930s setting.
