Plot summary
Sarah was recently freed from slavery and is traveling with her daughter. The girl is light-skinned, and Sarah is convinced the Devil has taken hold of the child, since any creature she touches dies. Word has reached Sarah of a faith healer in a distant town who is said to be able to save the girl, and she means to bring her there. Dr. Bender is a widowed physician and does not accept that explanation. He believes the child suffers from a sickness instead, and he has no wish to become involved. He agrees to lead the two of them on the five-day journey to the healer.
