Plot summary
Kabir Rajdheer Singh, the youngest son of the businessman Rajdheer Singh, is a medical student at the Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences, where his temper and rebellious streak have earned him a reputation as a bully. After a brawl during an inter-college football match, the dean orders him to apologize or leave. Kabir chooses to go, then stays after he meets Preeti Sikka, a first-year student. His friends tell the student body that she is his, and the initially timid Preeti comes to accept his overbearing manner and returns his feelings. Kabir earns his MBBS and leaves for Mussoorie to study further, and the relationship holds over the next few years. Once Preeti graduates, she brings Kabir to meet her conservative parents, but her father Harpal finds them kissing and throws him out.

- Sandeep Reddy Vanga wanted Ranveer Singh for the Hindi remake of his Telugu film Arjun Reddy, while Vijay Devarakonda, who starred in the original, turned the offer down. When talks with Singh failed, Vanga approached Shahid Kapoor, but producers Murad Khetani and Ashwin Varde wanted Arjun Kapoor.
- Kiara Advani was Sandeep Reddy Vanga's first choice for Preeti, but the talks fell through and Tara Sutaria was announced instead before leaving over delays to her debut film Student of the Year 2. The makers then went back to Advani, whose work in M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story Vanga cited.
- Despite its adults-only certificate, Kabir Singh became the first A-certified Indian film to gross over ₹200 crore in India.
- The Central Board of Film Certification gave Kabir Singh an adults-only A certificate and asked the makers to modify a scene of a character snorting drugs, and to insert static warning messages against drug abuse in all such scenes.
- Kabir Singh was never released in Pakistan: producer Murad Khetani chose to keep the Shahid Kapoor film out of the country following the 2019 Pulwama attack.
- In a first-of-its-kind marketing deal, Kabir Singh became the first Bollywood film to have its own theatre, with 15 PVR theatres in 15 Indian cities renamed "Kabir Singh Ka Theatre" and auditoriums styled after the title character.
- To play Kabir in two time periods, Shahid Kapoor shed 14 kilos for the "college boy" look, then worked out so he would look bigger but not muscular for the "puffy, groggy alcoholic" look.
