Plot summary

After a party marking his retirement from the police force, Mike Dooley is driving home with Jerry Lee, his police dog, when the two interrupt a robbery at an electronics lab. Prototype computer chips have been taken. The FBI draws its guns on Dooley at the scene, and during the chase Jerry Lee swallows one of the chips. Because he was there, the FBI treats Dooley as a suspect and freezes his pension until the theft is solved. Needing cash, Dooley breeds Jerry Lee and meets Catherine Coleman, the owner of the other dog. He gets a private investigator's license and advertises in the paper, and his first caller, Laura Fields, asks him to find her missing fiancé.
