John Wycliffe: The Morning Star (1984) on Netflix

Plot summary

The story is told in flashback and covers the later years of John Wycliffe's life. An Oxford scholar who also preaches as a layman, he criticizes the Church for abuses of power and for teachings he calls false, and he argues that England should not submit to a foreign pontiff. He takes the side of poor peasants against wealthy men who mistreat them, which sets church authorities against him. Wycliffe becomes convinced that the Bible must be available in English, so that ordinary readers as well as the learned can read it, and he sets about the work of translation.
