Plot summary
John Brown lives in Riverton with his niece Penny and her beagle, Brain. He works as a security guard at the Bradford robotics laboratory but longs to be a police officer. Artemus Bradford and his daughter Brenda are developing a robotic foot for the Gadget Program, which aims to add android officers to the police force. A tycoon named Sanford Scolex breaks into the lab and steals the robotic foot. John chases Scolex, but his car flips and explodes. Scolex's left hand is crushed, and his associate Kramer fits him with a mechanical claw; he becomes Dr. Claw. Brenda rebuilds John as the first test subject of the Gadget Program, embedding gadgets throughout his body and giving him the alias Inspector Gadget. A chip powers him. With help from the Gadgetmobile, a robotic car, John begins testing his new abilities.
