Plot summary
Teenager Karen Braden is a mental hospital outpatient when her father George and her sister Isa bring her to a government research site in the Idaho lava fields near the Craters of the Moon. The research was meant for matter transference and instead produced something else: time travel, and an unexplained ecological disaster that will soon destroy civilization. The process damages the health of anyone much older than twenty, whose kidneys hemorrhage after the experience, so the scientists plan to send only young people fifty-six years into the future to build a new civilization there. Once the government takes control, the machines that send people forward are switched off, leaving members of the group stranded in the future, among abandoned towns, deserted vehicles, and no radio signals or air traffic.
