Plot summary
Writer James Baldwin returns to the American South, where he spent part of the civil rights movement, and travels north to Newark to visit Amiri Baraka. His route runs through Selma, Birmingham and Atlanta and out to the beaches of St. Augustine, Florida, with Chinua Achebe along for part of the way. Baldwin argues that the progress the country claims to have made since those years is not real, and he asks what became of the children of that struggle. Reviewers described the result as a political history of the movement and of a nation that has not delivered justice and equality to Black Americans.
