Plot summary
In 1939, a Ukrainian-American man, Yaro, comes into a large inheritance from his father on one condition: that he marry a Ukrainian girl. If Yaro is still unmarried a year after his father's death, the fortune passes to his distant relative Mary. Mary's mother Helen brings her daughter to the Carpathian Mountains, where Yaro is staying, and does everything she can to stop him from marrying. Yaro stays at a hotel run by a group of women who are strong, fun-loving and educated. An eccentric professor there hunts a unique butterfly whose eggs are laid only on lambs' tails. In the mountains Yaro meets Ksenya, a Hutsul girl who matches his father's account of Ukrainian women.
