Plot summary
Arun is seventeen when he leaves Kerala to study at KCG Tech, a college in Chennai, and his story runs from that age into his early thirties. He falls for a classmate, Darshana, the first time he sees her, and the two become a couple soon after their first year begins. When his friend Antony travels to meet a woman he knows from the internet, Arun goes along and takes a liking to her colleague. He tells her he is single and tries to kiss her, but moral police interrupt them. Guilt drives Arun to confess the incident to Darshana, and she ends their relationship in anger.

- Hridayam reintroduced once-obsolete audio cassettes and limited-edition vinyl records in India, a dream shared by director Vineeth Sreenivasan, composer Hesham Abdul Wahab and Think Music executives. Because cassette production had become obsolete in the country, Think Music partnered with a cassette manufacturer in Japan to import the physical copies.
- Hridayam marked the return of the film studio Merryland Studio to production after a 30-year hiatus, under the new company Merryland Cinemas.
- Vineeth Sreenivasan said he cast Pranav Mohanlal after liking him in Aadhi, wanting a charmer rather than an accomplished actor, like Suriya in Vaaranam Aayiram or Logan Lerman in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
- Filming was paused in March 2020 by India's 21-day COVID-19 lockdown, when about 50 percent of the film was complete, mostly footage featuring Pranav Mohanlal and Darshana Rajendran.
- The film was shot at KCG College of Technology in Chennai, where director Vineeth Sreenivasan, his wife Divya and his friend and actor Aju Varghese had studied.
- Vineeth Sreenivasan said Hridayam was based on a lot of incidents from his own college life in Chennai, and that the first half of the film is a cinematic dramatisation of real-life events.
