Plot summary
Jeff Wilson, a policeman from upstate, goes undercover in the small southern town of Barefoot County to shut down an alleged moonshining operation. His chief warns him that earlier attempts failed: locals stay quiet and Sheriff Bull Tatum will not accept help from outside law enforcement. The bootlegging itself is handled quietly in Red Rock County, just past Tatum's jurisdiction, by Stella Holcomb and her daughters Rosa Lee, Vicky, and Mary Ann. Mary Ann dresses as a man to bring the moonshine to Otis Perkins, owner of a gas station and diner. Tatum and deputy Clyde man roadblocks to check the cars coming in. Driving into town, Wilson is forced off the road by Perkins's sons, Culley Joe, Clarence, and Junior, and the Holcombs find him unconscious and take him in. He claims he is only looking for work.
