Plot summary

Bobby Gold and his partner Tim Sullivan are pursuing Robert Randolph, a wanted drug dealer who has killed a police officer. On their way to arrest an accomplice, they come upon a murder scene: an elderly Jewish candy store owner in a ghetto has been shot, reportedly for a fortune said to be hidden in her basement. Her son, a doctor, uses his influence to get Gold, who is Jewish, assigned to the case. Gold resents being pulled off a higher-profile hunt and shows little interest in his own background, even as people in the Jewish community stir up his sense of not fitting in. A nighttime return to the scene turns his reluctance into curiosity, and he learns of a Zionist group operating in the city. Its confidence appeals to him, and he tries to join.
