Plot summary
Dave Robicheaux, a former New Orleans detective and Vietnam veteran, has stopped drinking and settled in the Louisiana swamplands with his wife Annie. When a drug smuggler's plane goes down in the lake in front of them, Dave dives in and saves the only survivor, a Salvadoran girl named Alafair, whom Annie revives on the boat and the couple take in. A DEA officer, Dautrieve, comes to the parish, and the case leads Dave to Bubba Rocque, the area's leading drug kingpin and a friend from his New Iberia days.
