Plot summary
There is no linear storyline. The documentary moves among African American residents of Hale County, Alabama, in the Black Belt. Quincy Bryant and Daniel Collins appear and reappear, their lives moving through college and fatherhood, while other people of the county come and go. Questions posed as intertitles loosely hold the shape of the piece, which is arranged as five musical movements, like a visual orchestra. The making of it set out to place a community at the center of documentary's language of truth, to take part rather than to capture, filming from people rather than at them. Its attention rests on what can be profound in the simplest depictions of existence.
