Plot summary
Harry is a charismatic eleven-year-old boy who arrives at his new secondary school near London without the ability to read or write. The difficulty is not his alone: illiteracy has been passed down through generations of his family. Sophie, the teacher who helps him, is dedicated to his progress, and Harry works at the basics of reading and writing with her. Around them, Britain is in the middle of debates about class, identity and social mobility. The film is a coming-of-age story that stays with Harry over two years, as he works to improve academically and to imagine a different future for himself.
