Plot summary
Nadja is brought to a prison colony on the island of Mortavia in 1480, convicted of infanticide and sentenced to death. The lead jailer, Carl, recognizes her as the woman who abandoned him years ago, and he asks the colony's chaplain, Father Guru, to spare her. Guru agrees on a condition: Carl will rob graves for him, because the church needs money and medical schools pay for bodies. Guru also sends Carl to the nun Olga, his former mistress, a vampire who can mix a potion that makes Nadja appear dead. In return, Olga asks Carl to bring her executed victims so she can drink their blood.
